R&D grant funding is available here in the UK, our experts can advise on how to integrate your R&D grant and R&D tax claim to maximise the benefits to your business on a more immediate basis.

The Smart Programme (Innovate UK)

Smart is a UK small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) single company scheme, managed by Innovate UK.

We advise on two types of grant:

  • Proof-of-concept grant: maximum grant of £100k, and up to 60% of total project costs may be funded.
  • Development of prototype grant: maximum grant of £250k; up to 35% of total project costs for medium enterprises, or up to 45% for small and micro enterprises, may be funded.

Collaborative Research & Development (CR&D) Programme (Innovate UK)

CR&D is designed to assist the industrial and research communities to work together on R&D projects.  Example calls have featured in ICT/Digital, Low Carbon Vehicles, Biotechnology, and Healthcare sectors. Projects must comprise industry led activity which is collaborative, and involving a minimum of two partners. Grant levels can be between 25% and 50%. Funding is typically £100K - £2M.

Catalysts are run jointly by Innovate UK and the Research Councils. A Catalyst focuses on a specific priority area and aims to help take projects from research to as close to commercial viability as possible. Three levels of funding are usually available. Current Catalyst programmes include:

Biomedical Catalyst: Aimed at addressing healthcare challenges. Two categories of grant are available; Early Stage and Late Stage Awards.

Agri-Tech Catalyst: Primary crop and livestock production, including aquaculture, non-food uses of arable crops, food security and nutrition.

IB Catalyst: Innovative Industrial Biotechnology processes.

Energy Catalyst: To respond to challenges across the energy sector.

The Catalyst Programme Grants vary from £150,000 to £10,000,000 with levels available from 25% up to 70%.

To complete the picture, it is important to appreciate that whilst R&D tax claims and R&D grants are both significant sources of financial assistance; they do not always work alongside each other very well.

For example, a company will automatically be excluded from claiming R&D tax relief, under the SME scheme, for an R&D activity if they have already secured any State Aid, such as a ‘Proof-of-Concept Grant’ under the Smart Programme.

The good news is that R&D tax claims and R&D grants can be integrated if managed by an expert in both fields, this is great news for your business as it provides an immediate cash flow with the added advantage of greater long term returns. Our experts are on hand to advise you further.
